HER REBEL HIGHNESS, a YA historical novel by Diana Ma, releases today from Abrams/Amulet! It’s the sequel to Diana’s debut HEIRESS APPARENTLY, which came out in 2020.
ABOUT HER REBEL HIGHNESS:
An epic story of love and betrayal set against the backdrop of the Tiananmen Square protests
In Heiress Apparently, Gemma Huang’s big acting break led her to Beijing, where she uncovered an incredible family secret. This second novel in the Daughters of the Dynasty series delves further into Gemma’s complex and storied legacy, moving back one generation to tell the story of Gemma’s mother, Lei, as she finds love against the backdrop of 1980s China and the Tiananmen Square protests and makes a difficult decision that forever alters the course of her life.
“Details concerning Wu Zetian, the Cultural Revolution, and the 1989 protests are smoothly woven into the narrative, providing essential context. . . . Immersive and rousing.” —Kirkus
“Reminiscent of Jenny Han’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Ma successfully creates vivid settings in Los Angeles and China as she uncovers important issues facing Asian Americans, including family expectations, identity, sacrifice, and honor.” —School Library Journal
“More than a cute rom-com, this novel highlights LGBTQ+ rights, contemporary attitudes held by Chinese citizens, Chinese history, Hollywood’s ethnic prejudices, and pride in culture and family.” —Booklist
